Photo Trip #15: Still-Life

One of the subjects for artists and photographers is “still life”.

By definition, a still life is usually an inanimate object where form and texture are emphasized. The attached two photos are simple examples. Both were taken at a farm stand in Mattituck on the North Fork of Long Island. One of the features of a still life is getting the freedom of re-arranging the objects before taking the photo.

That way you can control lighting and color balance to a certain extent. The gourds are very colorful, but the turnips give a softer, almost black & white appearance.

Until next time,

D.T.
